Political consultations were held between the foreign ministries of Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran

On February 12, 2025, political consultations were held in Tehran between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Turkmen side was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and the Iranian side was headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Seyyed Abbas Araghchi.

During the consultations, an exchange of views took place on issues of bilateral partnership in political-diplomatic, trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian spheres.

The parties noted that it is the regular and trustworthy dialogue at the highest political level that contributes to further strengthening of traditional good-neighbourly ties.

Noting the importance of the International Year of Peace and Trust, the delegations discussed the possibilities of expanding Turkmen-Iranian cooperation to advance international peace, stability and sustainable development. In this regard, the importance of partnership within the UN, as well as other reputable international and regional structures, in particular the ECO and OIC, was emphasized. In this regard, an overview of the international and regional agenda took place.

The delegations underlined the importance of interparliamentary relations. It was noted that the interparliamentary Friendship Group of two countries is successfully functioning in this regard. The upcoming events in this vector were discussed.

Trade-economic cooperation was a separate topic of discussion. Bilateral trade turnover indicators were considered. Fuel, energy and transport sectors were designated among the priorities.

In accordance with the instructions of the highest leadership, the parties defined further steps to implement the tasks set, including in the area of ​​water resources management. In this regard, the leading role of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation was highlighted.

In addition, the participants of the meeting discussed issues of cultural and humanitarian cooperation, including the hosting of joint events in the current year. Opportunities of strengthening ties in the field of science, education, healthcare and sports were considered.
