On May 13, 2026, the 84th international meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of the CIS member states opened in Ashgabat.

At the beginning of the event, the Address of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to the participants of the meeting was read out.

Within the framework of the meeting, which is being held with the participation of heads and representatives of the Ministry of Railway Transport of Turkmenistan and railway departments of the CIS countries, emphasis was also placed on accompanying events.

As speakers emphasized, the agenda of the routine meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of the CIS member states included issues of coordinating the operation of railway transport at the interstate level, ensuring the technological integrity of the international railway network, and its development under modern conditions.

During the meeting, the organization's performance over the past period was also reviewed, and promising areas of cooperation were discussed. An exchange of views took place on fulfilling the tasks stemming from the work program of the Council for Railway Transport of the CIS member states.

Speakers noted that Turkmenistan takes an active stance in increasing transit cargo transportation volumes in the region. Emphasizing that transport diplomacy holds a special place in the peaceful foreign policy of Turkmenistan aimed at building bridges of friendship and cooperation between states, regions, and continents, the meeting participants highlighted the importance of exchanging views in this area during the current meeting with the participation of relevant representatives of the CIS member states.

It was specifically noted that, upon the proposal of Turkmenistan, a Resolution declaring November 26 of each year as "World Sustainable Transport Day" was adopted in May 2023 at the 70th plenary meeting of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly with the unanimous support of the UN member states.

In this regard, speakers stated that the First Global Conference on Sustainable Transport under the auspices of the UN was held in Ashgabat in 2016, and Turkmenistan's initiatives in the transport sector, as in other fields, continue to receive recognition from the Community of Nations.

In the afternoon, the II "Young Railway Workers" Forum took place within the framework of the 84th Council meeting, during which educational discussions held a key place. Important tasks were also defined regarding the development of a sustainable development strategy for this sector and the training of highly qualified specialists for railway transport structures.

Prospects for developing transport and transit corridors using railways and increasing cargo transportation in the region were discussed. Furthermore, the importance of the issues included in the agenda of the routine international meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of the CIS member states and the II "Young Railway Workers" Forum was emphasized.

The current events will contribute to the practical implementation of Turkmenistan's initiatives to expand cargo transportation volumes in the region along the North–South and East–West transport corridors, as well as to the effective utilization of the country's transit potential at a global level.

The work of the 84th international meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of the CIS member states and the II "Young Railway Workers" Forum continues.
